Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting transforms your landscape, and gives it a new, dramatic look. It provides: beauty (a new dramatic look), function (entertainment areas, pathways, a pool deck), safety (steps, paths), and security.

UPLIGHTING is installed above ground with a stake, or below ground, and creates a theatrical effect.

DOWNLIGHTING is installed in trees or on a building to light paths or steps.

MOONLIGHTING, high in trees, filters down through branches to create a dappled light on a lawn, patio, or driveway.

EFFECT - Light interesting trees, statues, and textured walls.

ACCENT - Fountain, waterfall, statues, a specimen plant.

SHADOWING - Create a dramatic image on a wall from a plant with open growth.

SILHOUETTING - Light a wall from behind a plant.

GRAZING - A textured wall, bark, masonry, or wood shingles.

UNDERWATER - make a pond glow or project light up into overhanging branches.

BORDER LIGHTS - can follow the lines of a gazebo.

STEPLITES - can be installed in a brick wall at every 5 or 6 steps or can be surface-mounted.

Low-Voltage lighting is usually the product of choice for the home landscape. Light fixtures are wired to a plug-in transformer that has an output of only 12 volts instead of the 120 volts available at the house, and there's no electrical shock to worry about! Low-voltage does not mean low-light. Three 50watt or 75watt halogen lights can illuminate a very large tree. And 12 volt lighting provides a far greater variety of lamps than 120 volt lighting. Our catalogs contain "lamp charts" showing the various intensities and widths available.

Up-Lights typically use 20, 35, 50, or 75watt lamps and come in narrow (12deg.), medium (23deg), and wide (45deg) widths. These "MR16" lamps are only 2" across. The fixtures are usually smaller than 120 volt fixtures. That's a plus, since it is best to see the effect of the light rather than the source of light.

Path Lights may be patterned after nature: a flower bent in the rainfall, a bell, or a mushroom. Or they may be very simple, or contemporary. They come in a variety of finishes: black, bronze, verde, copper verde, weathered iron, and more.

You can preview various lamps by looking at the Demo Room at the J. Harold Mitchell Co. or by borrowing one of our Demo Kits.

Low Voltage Lighting is easy to install. You do not have to be a licensed electrician. You do not need to put the wire in conduit, as with a 120V system. And the wire can be buried directly in the soil or installed above ground. UV Resistant, the wire is not affected by the sun's rays. Be sure to install wiring in the same trenches provided for sprinklers. The ease of installation make the 12V system relatively inexpensive to install.

Inexpensive to own, a 250watt system may cost only 15 cents for 4 hours of operation.

There are several ways you can control the system: Timer, Photocell, or a Timer/Photocell Combination that comes on when it gets dark, and shuts off at the exact time you choose. The "X-10 PRO" allows you to change timer settings and turn the system on and off from anywhere in your house. Just, plug it in -- no special wiring needed! It is dependable and inexpensive. You can also switch your system at the house, manually, if your house wiring allows for this.

Choose a transformer that is large enough to allow for future plant growth and, possibly, for adding more fixtures. Most transformers have a switch that drops the output by 1/2 volt, doubling lamp life. Some have a switch that increases output by 1 volt for long distance runs that would otherwise have too much drop in voltage.
